A Happy Heart is a Healthy Heart
In the headlines and hashtags this month you’ll read all about heart health. You’ll hear about the importance of consistent cardiovascular exercise. You’ll find out which superfoods to include in your diet to maximize blood flow to your tissues. And if you pay attention, you’ll find out that embracing a plant based diet has the potential to make you heart attack proof. All of these things are important, we won’t deny that.
But what if in all the talk about heart health we touched on something even more important than the muscle and vessels transporting life sustaining fluid around your body? What if we zoomed out and considered not just the organ but the whole person? What about the emotional part of the equation?
“Happiness” as a concept feels so elusive to so many people that sometimes we completely forget about pursuing it. We busy ourselves with our day to day lives and forget that choosing happiness is one of the simplest and most profound choices we make on a daily basis. (Hint: You’re making the choice whether you even realize it or not!) In doing so, we shortchange ourselves immeasurably.
Here’s a tip: Make a list of all of the things that bring you joy. Perhaps it’s a brisk walk in the quiet of the early morning, a warm cup of tea at the end of the day, volunteering, a yoga class, a long distance run, or a phone call to a friend. Write down all the things you can think of and schedule yourself to do at least one of these things every day. Make it a habit as non-negotiable as brushing your teeth. As you incorporate more intentional joyful activities into your life, your mood will improve, your happiness will blossom.
As JP has been saying for a long, long time:
When you love yourself, you’ll stop hurting yourself.
Find what brings you joy. Do more of it and you’ll find yourself making choices in all areas of your life that support your happy healthy heart. This Valentine’s Day, remember to share the love with yourself as well as those around you.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
